Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer will speak in two campaign events on Wednesday.

Steyer has been notable for his extended quest to impeach President Donald Trump, and he is now making his first campaign stops in Northwest Iowa.

At 9 a.m., Steyer will speak at Hardline Coffee Co, 611 Fifth St., in Sioux City, and at 12:45 p.m. at Better Day Coffee, in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The governor has announced the State of Iowa’s last fiscal year ended with a surplus of nearly $290 million.

The state’s 12-month fiscal year ended June 30th, but the books don’t close until two months later to ensure all receipts and payments are processed. This year’s $289.3 million surpluses are more than twice as large as last year’s.

Governor Reynolds issued a written statement this morning.

Confidence in the future of Iowa’s economy is beginning to slip among the heads of the state’s largest employers. That’s the latest outlook from the Iowa Business Council.

Third-quarter survey results from the 23 members of the IBC are at their lowest point since late 2016. The council’s executive director Georgia Van Gundy says economic and political uncertainty is driving confidence down.

Usually it’s been very positive, but actually this quarter our members aren’t quite as positive as they’ve been in the past, and for the most part, they are attributing their weakening confidence to the fact we have uncertain trade and political environments.”

Van Gundy says council members are urging Congress to pass the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement to provide market stability. She says 75 percent of the group’s business leaders expect to increase sales and capital spending in the next six months.
