Deadly Tornado In Western Iowa, Kamala Harris Cancels Sioux City Stop, 5;32

052219 532

Democratic presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand today has scheduled a Siouxland stop, while another candidate, Kamala Harris, is canceling her events in Sioux City and other Iowa towns to cast a vote in the U.S. Senate, according to the Sioux City Journal.

Harris had planned to speak tomorrow afternoon at Morningside College about Sioux City about teacher pay and other issues. However, the Harris campaign said that event, plus others in Iowa on Friday, will not be held, so she can vote on a disaster relief measure tomorrow night.

A Harris event in Sioux City with the Truman Club members of the Woodbury County Democratic Party is also canceled tomorrow.

One person was killed when a tornado hit two homes and crossed Interstate 80 in western Iowa this morning.  It was one of two tornadoes to touch down overnight.

The National Weather Service says one tornado followed a five-mile path near Adair with winds estimated between 120 and 130 miles per hour.  74-year-old Linda Lee Brownwell died and her husband Harold was hospitalized after the storm hit their home.

Weather service meteorologist Chad Hahn says tornadoes rarely happen at night. But he recommends keeping a cell phone and weather radio nearby because sirens may not be loud enough to hear.

HAHN 1: 10          Outdoor warning sirens are not designed to wake you up at nighttime to notify you in the event of a severe thunderstorm or a tornado.

A second tornado was identified near Anita. It destroyed an old barn but there were no reported injuries.
