COVID Cases Surge in Iowa and Across the Country

SPM News Noon 10.09.20

The U.S. is averaging more than 45,000 new COVID-19 positive tests a day, up 8% from the previous week, and more than double what the country saw in June, the CDC reports.

It's a case count experts warn is far too high ahead of what's forecast to be a challenging — and deadly — winter season. The latest forecast from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says U.S. virus deaths could reach 233,000 by the end of this month.

The University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation says more than 2,900 Americans could be dying daily by January.

Another 14 people with COVID-19 have died in Iowa, and there have been an additional 1,184 confirmed cases, the state reported Friday.

The state reported 1,433 COVID-19-related deaths, according to the state's Coronavirus.Iowa.gov website.

There have been more than 97000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Iowa since the pandemic began.

Today, the state was reporting 461 hospitalizations, up from 449 on Thursday.

In the past 24 hours, 77 patients have been admitted. However, there are slightly fewer patients in the ICU, at 104 patients, down from 112 yesterday.

Woodbury County reports 20 new cases of the covid-19 since yesterday for a 6,212 total, and no new deaths, for total 76 deaths and a 14.9% positivity rate.

Siouxland District Health Department reported 109 new cases of the novel coronavirus in Woodbury County Thursday, the highest number of cases added since May 8, when 116 cases were recorded.
