Democrat Cory Booker has dropped out of the presidential race after failing to qualify for the December primary debate. Booker announced Monday that he was ending a campaign whose message of unity and love failed to gain traction in a political era marked by chaos and anxiety.

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg will be in Sioux City and Le Mars later this week.  He will be in Orange City and Arnolds Park on Thursday and Sioux City on Thursday evening at West Middle School.  The Presidential candidate will be in Le Mars Friday morning at the Plymouth County Museum.

The Women For Trump bus tour will stop in Sioux City on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Country Celebrations. Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump, will speak in support of his re-election quest.  The bus tour is making three stops in Iowa.

Iowa lawmakers have convened the 2020 legislative session with the House voting to name Republican Rep. Pat Grassley the new House speaker. With his family including his grandparents U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley and Barbara Grassley looking on, Pat Grassley was elected by voice vote and took the oath of office to take the speaker’s chair.

And, today is the final day for nurses at MercyOne to decide if they plan to go on strike.

Because of the weather, an extra voting session was added for tonight.  A post on the local union’s Facebook page says the results of two votes could be released later this evening.

Union members are voting whether to accept a proposed contract from the hospital or to authorize a strike.  Voting also took place over the weekend.

The committee working on the contract is recommending a “no” vote on the hospital contract and “yes” for the strike.
