Columbus Day

Monday is Columbus Day in Iowa.  However, South Dakota is one of a growing number of states that have turned the holiday on its ear.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

“Columbus sailed the blue in 1492” was a refrain long heard in American schools on the second Monday in October.  However, the explorer’s reputation has suffered as the facts about his ill-treatment of native peoples in the West Indies have become commonly known. So South Dakota now observes Native American Day; the state of Vermont and the city of Phoenix observe Indigenous Peoples' Day. 

It’s still a day off for federal government workers and that includes the postal service. In Iowa, it will be business as usual for state, county and city officials. 

However, in Nebraska and South Dakota, state offices and agencies will be closed. Garbage collection in North Sioux City will be moved back one day.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary
