Buttercup Bill

Nov 15, 2016

I-80 Friday Night outside of Iowa City.
Republican Bobby Kaufman, 73rd District, Wilton, IA

An Iowa lawmaker has a few words of advice to public universities providing counseling to emotionally distressed students in the wake of last week’s presidential election. Sioux land Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has more.

Republican Bobby Kaufman’s “suck it up, buttercup bill” is aimed at state universities that use extra taxpayer dollars to fund election-related sit-ins and grief counseling.  The Wilton lawmaker told the Des Moines Register Monday that “People have the right to be hysterical … on their own time.”

The bill would fine schools that extend the extra counseling services for double the amount spent. It also calls for new criminal penalties for protesters who shut down highways, like those who briefly closed Interstate 80 in Iowa City last week during an anti-Donald Trump protest.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
