Bob Scott Running for Mayor Once Again, RFS Waivers Causing Pain in Rural America

Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott says today he is running for reelection.  Scott has been mayor of Sioux City for 14 years. He is also the owner of a tax preparation business. So far his only opponent is a former ESL teacher and community college instructor Maria Rundquist, who runs a translation business.  While there are so far only two candidates who have filed to run for mayor, there are three candidates who have filed to run for a city council seat, and that means there will be a primary election.

Incumbent Rhonda Capron has filed nomination papers, as have accountant Michael Bayala, and local hip hop artist Rosario Perez, Jr.  If there are three candidates or more in a local race in Sioux City there is automatically a primary.  The primary is scheduled for October 8th. The filing deadline for city and school board races is 5 p.m. Thursday.

Iowa Republican Governor Kim Reynolds says she’s asking President Trump to help the ethanol industry. That’s after Trump reportedly okayed exemptions that lowered demand for the corn-based biofuel.

The move sparked outrage from elected officials and Iowa corn growers who say it’s a blow to the ethanol industry.  An ethanol plant in Merrill has been shut down for four weeks because of the exemptions.  Monte Shaw is the executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association.  Shaw says the Trump administration has broken its promises to Iowan’s who are already going through some tough economic times.

Shaw says he hopes that President Trump tell the Environmental Protection Agency to restore the renewable fuels standard to its previous levels
