An Iowa Senate subcommittee has advanced a bill that would ban the use of video cameras in bathrooms and locker rooms in state and local government buildings. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

The legislation was created after a female University of Iowa female student who noticed a camera on the ceiling of the Iowa City Public Library bathroom. The Des Moines Register reports that the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa asked the library to remove security cameras from its bathrooms over privacy concerns. The video cameras are still in place. Senate Study Bill 1184 prohibits the use of "monitoring devices," audio or video, in a toilet, bath or shower facility, locker room, diaper changing area, or other space where aperson expects privacy. The bill applies to public libraries, public schools and other government offices open to the public.
