A special weeklong celebration is being held in the Sioux City metro, and it even has the word celebration in the title.
Celebrate Siouxland, or Cele-brahn-do Siouxland, started on Monday, September 16, and runs an entire week through the 22nd.
It is touted as a premier event that focuses on building and uplifting our Latino and immigrant communities. It takes place in conjunction with Welcoming Week, which is a national initiative that brings together “neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity.”
Celebrate Siouxland is hosted by the Unity in Action organization and takes place in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
This week-long celebration included Loteria (Bingo) night on Wednesday, and a parade will take place on Friday at 6 p.m, with that routing down Dakota Avenue.
A day-long Latino Heritage festival will be on Sunday, and last year’s concluding festival drew more than 5,000 people.
The week began Monday with the first piece called Immigrant Business Tours. That was when people could go to several businesses to hear from the immigrant owners on such things as how they got started, how the businesses are faring, and more.
The tour was intended to highlight the prosperity Immigrant owned businesses add to South Sioux City.
So for this episode of What’s The Frequency, I took in the Immigrant Business Tour, and heard some interesting anecdotes on the challenges and joys of the owners.
We began at Yummy House, at 1905 Dakota Avenue in South Sioux City, for a discussion with owner Bella Tran. Other stops were at Cleo’s Bakery and Sweet Treats, and Erika’s Jewelry, at 2816 Dakota Avenue, where we spoke with owner Erika Bolaños.
