A discussion on diversity brought local leaders together Thursday night for an honest look at racism.
“History is repeating itself, it just looks very different than the 1960s,” said Treyla Lee.
“If you see something wrong, then stand up for it,” said Mike Brown.
Because of social distancing measures, a small group heard insight on what it means to be a person of color, and how to embrace people of different backgrounds.
"It’s important for parents to nurture where their kids are. If they ask question like ‘Why is their skin darker than I?’ The you can ask them ‘What do you think?’ Let them answer to find out where they are at and then you can respond accordingly to educate them.”
That’s panelist Treyla Lee who was joined by Mike Brown of Siouxland Public Media’s Moonwalk Radio and the head of the Sioux City Human Rights Commission Karen Mackey also took part as a member of the Native American and LGBTQ community.
“Be an ally whenever you can, to give your voice to educate yourself but to acknowledge you don’t have all of the answers because none of us do,” said Karen Mackey.
The event held at Camp High Hopes was organized by the Junior League of Sioux City, an organization of women with a goal of improving the community through volunteerism.
