Western Iowa Tech and Kirkwood Colleges Cancel Most Face-to-Face Courses; Fears about COVID-19

In an effort to support public health and minimize the spread of COVID-19 through social distancing, Western Iowa Tech Community College will extend Spring Break for students through Sunday, March 22 and will transition many of its face-to-face classes to online classes beginning March 23.

Select lab-based, hands-on courses that will meet as scheduled starting on March 23 in a face-to-face format. Students should refer to their email several times a day as instructors will be sending out specific guidance regarding their classes. WITCC employees will continue to work as scheduled and campuses will remain open. We want to emphasize there are no identified cases of COVID-19 at Western Iowa Tech Community College. These measures are being put into place to protect the health and safety of our students, staff, and faculty.

And another large community college system in eastern Iowa says that most, but not all, of its classes will be temporarily held online to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Kirkwood College said that all classes with a lecture format will not meet in person beginning March 23 through at least April 10. The college is based in Cedar Rapids but has a secondary campus in Iowa City and several centers throughout the region. Its announcement comes one day after Iowa's three public universities said they would suspend in-person instruction through at least April 3.
