Chief Standing Bear: A Journey to Statuary Hall; The Exchange
This week on The Exchange, we hear the story of Ponca tribe chief Standing Bear. Siouxland Public Media and Small Wonders' Jim Schaap has been telling Standing Bear's story in a four-part series. We will hear that series today.
We will also hear a preview of a new documentary about the journey of Chief Standing Bear's sculpture to Statuary Hall in Washington, DC. We talk with the documentary's co-directors and hear from the leader of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, Larry Wright Jr.And, we hear from the executive director of Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs, Judi M. gaiashkibos. Judi is also one of the co-directors of the documentary, with University of Nebraska Lincolg graduate Ingrid Holmquist.
The story of Chief Standing Bear has also inspired a major motion picture that will be filmed in Nebraska. Producers were inspired by the book, I Am A Man: Chief Standing Bear's Story for Justice, by UNL Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication Joe Starita. We talk with Starita about Chief Standing Bear.
