A Southern Rock Retrospective

Wikimedia Commons

Southern rock is one of America's tried and true musical genres. On this B-Sides with Bolin and Blumberg we cover the gamut from the 70's to present day.

The show starts off with three bands, Blackfoot and Lynyrd Skynyrd both from Florida, and Point Blank from Texas.

Blackfoot, which is still active, features Rick Medlocke, who is also a current member of Lynyrd Skynyrd quite possibly one of the top five bands in U.S. history. Meanwhile, Point Blank was produced by Bill Ham, best known for his work with ZZ Top.

Jason and the Scorchers, from Nashville, follows with two songs, one of which is a cover of Bob Dylan's Absolutely Sweet Marie. They are best known for the unique vocals of Jason Ringenberg and the blazing guitar of Warner Hodges.

The focus then switches to John “Jojo” Herman, the keyboardist for the North Mississippi Allstars. He made two solo albums both of which are truly excellent.

Dan Baird and Homemade Sin follow with two cuts from his live cd, Straight out of Georgia Like a Satellite. Baird is best known for fronting the Georgia Satellites and is still active today as a solo artist and with The Yayhoos.

The most current songs are by the Allman Betts Band, which features the sons of Gregg Allman, Dickie Betts and Berry Oakley all former members of the Allman Brothers. Then it's back to Texas with a new album by Reese Wynans, the former keyboardist for Stevie Ray Vaughn. This album includes Stevie's rhythm section, Double Trouble, and a slew of guest vocalists and singers. The cut heard on the show features Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Sam Moore. The album, Sweet Release, was produced by Joe Bonamassa.

So kick back and enjoy an hour of Southern Rock the B-Sides's way.
