Rock from Down Under

When most people think of Australia, they probably think of kangaroos, koala bears and shrimp on the barbie. What many don't think of is great rock and roll.

Great Aussie rock actually started back in the 60's with the emergence of The Easybeats, which broke into U.S. radio with Friday on my Mind. But it was in the 70's and 80's when the whole scene blossomed.

On this B-Sides, we take an in-depth look at the various styles of rock, which marked the diversity of great music from coast to coast.

The show starts with the 70's band Skyhooks and 80's You Am I. Both are considered one of the 10 best bands from the region.

Next come the sounds of Mental As Anything, Someloves and DM3. All three are considered at the top of the power pop mountain and had developed a cult following among many American music connoisseurs.

These sounds are followed by a trio of hard rock bands included The Angels and, of course, AC/DC featuring the Young brothers, Angus and Malcolm. Interestingly, their brother, George, was the co-founder of the aforementioned, Easybeats.

So sit back, put another shrimp on the barbie and be amazed at how good rock and roll can be from the land down under.
