The Stones vs The Groovies, A B-Sides Battle of the Bands

There is likely nothing so visceral or gut churning as the 60's and early 70's primal rock and roll.

On this edition of the B-Side, we bring this feeling to life with our 1st Battle of the Bands. The Rolling Stones face off against San Francisco's Flamin' Groovies with newly released versions of songs that have been in the Stones' repertoire for more than 50 years.

You'll hear songs such as “Spider and the Fly,” “Carol,” “It's All Over Now” and “I Wanna Be Your Man” and discover why Brian Jones, and not Mick and Keith, is responsible for forming the band and setting it off on its historic career.

Also, hear cuts from a 1971 gig at the Marquee Club, arguably their best album, Exile on Main Street, and a rousing version of “Brown Sugar” featuring Eric Clapton.

As far as The Flamin' Groovies, which came together in 1965, many critics considered the band to be an American Stones.

The Groovies spent years on the road and in the studio honing a sound led initially by Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney.

The B-Sides proudly presents a number of the band's covers including “Kicks,” “Slow Down” and an obscure Who song,  “Call Me Lightning.”  You'll also hear some of their most down and dirty ditties, “Teenage Head” and “Slow Death.”

So if you're looking to hear something that'll knock your socks inside out, listen to the B-Sides every Saturday at 6 p.m. right here on the best in rock, Siouxland Publc Media.
