Today I am recommending the New York Times best-selling psychological thriller The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.
Rachel, a 30-something divorcee, rides the train every day to and from London. Each day the train stops at the same spot, allowing her to observe a young couple, who coincidentally live not too far from her former home. She finds herself drawn to this couple, and the imaginary life she has created for them in her mind. This couple’s life seems so perfect, similar to the life she’s recently lost.
However, Rachel is not at in a good state of mind when she travels. She has a drinking problem that has caused her to lose, not only her home, but her marriage. She drinks almost constantly, causing her to consistently make a scene and eventually blackout.
One day, while the train is at a standstill, Rachel sees something shocking. It is only for a brief moment until the train starts up again, but she fears she’s seen too much. Her curiosity, and need for more information, lead her to a path plagued with unanswered questions.
She wants to go to the police with the information she has, but her drinking makes her a not too reliable source. Has she actually done more harm than good, not only to her own well-being, but to the others that are involved? After all, she really doesn’t even truly know who they are.
The Girl on the Train is an electrifying debut that fans of Gone Girl, Before I Go to Sleep, and The Silent Wife will enjoy. This suspenseful page turner will keep you guessing right up until the shocking end.
Check out this heart stopping thriller, and others like it at the Sioux City Public Library.
