Check It Out: George Guidall

Today, I’m focusing my recommendation on my newfound love for audiobook narrator George Guidall. Widely regarded as the world’s most acclaimed and prolific audiobook narrator, George Guidall has been delighting listeners for over 20 years and has lent his voice to more than 1,300 unabridged novels…and counting.

I honestly can’t say why it took me so long to listen to one of the many novels he’s narrated, but I’m sure glad I finally did. I completely fell in love with George Guidall’s narration skills while listening to The Cold Dish, the first novel in author Craig Johnson’s critically acclaimed Walt Longmire mystery series.

For you Check It Out listener’s not familiar with the series, this gritty Western mystery series is set in the vividly depicted yet fictional Absaroka County, WY, and features sheriff Walt Longmire and the quirky, eccentric residents that populate their small slice of the wilds of Wyoming.

George Guidall’s artistry is thoroughly on display in The Cold Dish. It is amazing to hear how he breathes life into each character’s personality, giving each of them a truly distinctive and memorable voice. Whether Guidall is voicing Walt’s sarcastic tone, Deputy Moretti’s fast-talking reprimands, or Henry Standing Bear’s thoughtful musings, he completely draws you into the compelling tale that Craig Johnson has written.

In addition to narrating the entirety of the Walt Longmire mystery series, George Guidall 1,300+ narrations include classics like Don Quixote and The Illiad to recent bestsellers like Daniel Silva’s House of Spies and Neil Gaiman’s American Gods

On describing his approach to narrating and the relationship that develops between author and narrator, Guidall told NPR, “I’ve often described myself as a literary hermit crab, I scuttle around the currents of literature and find a home in someone else’s imagined truth…There is an amazing connection with the author. His voice becomes my voice.”

Whether you are new to audiobook listening or a true audiobook vet, I highly recommend anything narrated by George Guidall.
